Nunavut will not be ready to end seasonal clock changes before the next scheduled return to standard time on November 1, 2026, Minister George Hickes says in a letter presented to Iqaluit Council. The October 9 letter targets implementation in 2027.

Coordination comes first

Hickes says the territory is assessing removal of seasonal time changes but needs to coordinate with airlines, technology companies, internet organizations and other services. He identifies alignment with southern transportation hubs and Nunavut’s three time zones as practical challenges.

The letter asks municipalities to take a coordinated approach and cautions against making independent local changes. It describes time-zone authority as resting with the territorial government. This is the minister’s explanation in the correspondence, not a new municipal bylaw.

Council discussion does not change the clocks

At the October 27 meeting, Councillor Methusalah Kunuk expressed dissatisfaction with seasonal clock changes. Councillor Romeyn Stevenson said some wanted a faster timetable but welcomed recognition of the issue.

The correspondence was handled as an information item. No motion ending Iqaluit’s seasonal time changes was identified in the recording. The letter provides no final implementation date within 2027, so residents should follow official time-change notices for practical instructions.

Recording and review basis

This report uses a complete transcript-assisted review of the October 27 English recording, checked against the agenda package. The official October 27 motion registry was checked November 1 and now confirms the numbered decisions and collective vote totals. Approved October 27 minutes were still not linked. Automated transcription can mishear words and names; individual voting and attendance totals were not changed.
