Iqaluit RCMP told Council that police had recently checked approximately 120 vehicles over a Friday and Saturday, working with Municipal Enforcement. More impaired-driving enforcement was being planned around Halloween and through the Christmas season.
Council asks for more road checks
Deputy Mayor Kimberly Smith called for more impaired-driving initiatives as roads become darker and slipperier. She pointed to damaged vehicles seen around town and the earlier commercial-driver enforcement initiative.
Corporal Sean Mulcahy said police had begun impaired-driving weekends, describing roughly 60 vehicle stops on each of the two nights. The statement reports enforcement activity; it does not specify how many charges resulted from those checks.
Alcohol involvement is broader than Liquor Act statistics
Mulcahy explained that a file can involve alcohol while being recorded under a more serious Criminal Code category. The number of Liquor Act files therefore does not capture every alcohol-related call.
The written monthly reports record 939 calls for service in July, 1,115 in August and 933 in September. The month-by-month figures below include alcohol involvement, detainees, offences and other activity. These are the RCMP’s reported counts, not a count of unique residents.
School support also discussed
Councillor Amber Aglukark asked about presentations helping young people handle violence and difficult situations at school. Mulcahy said police could work with schools and community partners on suitable presentations. The discussion did not establish a funded new school program or a delivery timetable.
